COVID-19

COVID-19 - Managing the Sick Patient

COVID-19 is a global pandemic. The virus SARS-CoV-2 has infected millions, killed large numbers and left many with long term problems. Increasing numbers of patients are requiring hospital care and intensive care putting stress on health systems.

GOALS

  • To develop multimedia educational videos on the management of patients with COVID-19
  • To work with leading experts in intensive care and hospital care with experience in managing patients with COVID-19
  • To ensure not for profit distribution via the Internet
  • To trial distribution via the World Medical Education App/mobile phone system to facilitate access to health workers in resource poor countries
SOLUTIONS

We have already produced multimedia educational videos on:

  • Proning sick patients on intensive care
  • Oxygen therapy
  • Awake proning of COVID-19 patients
  • Safe intubation
  • Donning personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Doffing personal protective equipment (PPE)

We are working on further videos including CPAP and planning videos for community health workers in Africa on their approach to COVID-19.

TARGETS

The first six multimedia videos are now available, open access, on our learning platform.

The videos have been reviewed by the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA) and also made available on their website.

We are looking for funding to produce further videos. A major need is for community health workers in Africa to improve their training on recognising infected patients, when to refer them to hospital and how to protect themselves from infection so they can care for patients with COVID-19 and for children and adults with other diseases.
