Diabetes is emerging as a huge challenge to global health worldwide. 387 million people worldwide have diabetes and this will rise by 200 million in the next 20 years. Tragically 50% is undiagnosed.
Complications include heart attack, stroke, amputations, kidney failure, leg ulcers & amputations, recurrent infections and blindness. Better awareness for health workers, patients and communities worldwide is vital.
GOALS
- Improve prevention, detection and treatment of diabetes and its complications
- Reduce the impact on individuals and communities
- Ensure community health workers recognise diabetes and respond appropriately
- Raise public awareness
- Help patients with diabetes to understand their condition and treatment
SOLUTIONS
- Work with an experienced, international author team to develop appropriate, high-quality learning materials for each audience and region
- Demonstrate the clinical skills needed to diagnose diabetes and its complications, and provide appropriate treatment
- Gather clinical videos in our target regions (to increase engagement and local relevance)
- Engage with users to shape materials and obtain learner/user feedback
- Assess the impact on knowledge, skills and decision making of health workers; patients’ ability to manage their diabetes; and on public awareness
TARGETS
- Develop a resource for doctors, nurses and allied health professionals for Asia and Europe/North America/Australasia, covering prevention, detection and treatment of diabetes and its complications
- Produce simplified materials for community health workers globally
- Provide patient education videos for patients, families and the wider public, to improve awareness and to help patients to manage their condition
- Use interviews, focus groups and informal feedback to understand the views of learners, educators, policy makers and key opinion leaders in this important area
