Late diagnosis by health workers due to lack of recognition of precancerous lesions and oral cancer has disastrous consequences.
Oral cancer has a very poor prognosis with less than half of patients surviving 5 years after their diagnosis. The World Health Organisation estimates oral cancer causes 177,000 deaths every year. Tragically training of health workers in early recognition of oral cancer, particularly in resource-poor countries, is either nonexistent or extremely poor and presentation with very advanced disease is common. Detection at an advanced stage requires more aggressive and radical treatment with far greater complications.
